Companies involved in exemplary energy in Switzerland are increasing energy efficiency by 27.6%

With a consistent efficiency strategy, companies can save a lot of energy and money. The Confederation’s energy exemplary initiative proves this.

This initiative brings together the federal administration, the federal department of defence, civil protection and sports (Département fédéral de la défense, de la protection de la population et des sports - DDPS), the field of Federal Polytechnics (Ecoles polytechniques fédérales - EPF) and companies close to the Confederation (the post office, Swiss railways, Skyguide and Swisscom). Since 2017, Geneva Airport has also been a part of this, as have, since this year, Geneva Industrial Services (GIS) and Suva. [...]

The Swiss federal administration, the DDPS, companies close to the Confederation and the ETH field together account for around 2% of Switzerland's total energy consumption. With the creation of the Confederation's energy exemplary initiative and the signing of a joint declaration of intent in November 2014, these organizations have shown their willingness to set an example in terms of energy efficiency. They are committed to increasing their energy efficiency by 25% by 2020 compared to the reference year 2006. To this end, 39 common measures have been defined, 80% of which must be implemented by 2020. In addition, there are company-specific measures of which 15 measures per organization will be assessed in the context of the annual report.

In the meantime, other partners have joined the initiative. These are Geneva Airport in 2017, Geneva Industrial Services (GIS) and Suva in 2018. Talks are under way with other organizations at national and cantonal level.

The 2020 targets are on hand

By late 2017, the Confederation’s entire energy exemplary initiative had increased its energy efficiency by 27.6% on average (27% in 2016). This means that the efficiency target for 2020 has already been exceeded. But there is no question of resting on one’s laurels. If no extra effort is made, it is not possible to guarantee that this value will be reached or increased the following year. By late 2017, 79% of the 39 common measures had already been implemented (2016: 72%). The average amount of renewable energy as a percentage of total consumption increased slightly to 59% by late 2017 (2016: 57.4%).
