Feedback from the SIA Conference on Sustainable Industrial Areas

Last month, the latest Sustainable Industrial Area (SIA) conference was held in Rabat, Morocco. Suren Erkman, professor of Industrial Ecology at the University of Lausanne, was the keynote speaker and addressed the issue of the role of sustainable industrial areas in an international context of adapting to climate change.

The concept of Sustainable Industrial Areas (SIA) paves the way for sustainable industrial development by strengthening the organizational performance of industrial areas while reconciling economic, social and environmental interests.

The conference proposes to highlight this approach globally, but focuses on climate action in industrial areas: firstly, on the potential to contribute to mitigation objectives through GHG emission reductions in industrial areas, where emissions typically come from supplying energy, industrial operations, transport of goods and people, and waste generation and processing.

Secondly, the conference provided an opportunity to highlight and discuss the prerequisites and potentials of industrial areas in terms of minimizing economic and ecological risks and keeping them operational in the long term through adapting to climate change.

Thirdly, the conference addressed issues related to the financing of measures for adapting to the impacts of climate change and GHG mitigation in these areas.
