Published annually since 2007, the Global Innovation Index is a valuable comparative tool for company directors, policymakers and other interested parties who are trying to get an idea of the state of innovation in the world. It enables decision-makers, company directors and other interested parties to continuously assess the progress made.

In 2017, Switzerland leads the ranking for the seventh consecutive year and high-income economies occupy 24 of the top 25 major innovation sites, with China an exception in 22nd place. In 2016, China was the first of the middle-income economies to be among the top 25 economies in the ranking.

“Innovation acts as a motor for economic growth in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy, but more investment is needed to strengthen human creativity and increase economic output”, said Francis Gurry, Director General of WIPO. “Innovation can help ensure that the current economic recovery turns into visible growth over the long term”.

The 2017 Global Innovation Index, which is now in its tenth year, is published jointly by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO, a specialized agency of the United Nations).

The Global Innovation Index report proposes a ranking of the capacities and performance of economies in the area of innovation.
